Useful iPhone Tips & Tricks

I gleaned the tips from this blog post along with tips posted in the comments. There’s a whole bunch I had no idea about. There’s a few more in the link along with helpful photos for tips #1-12.

  1. Tap the status bar (the bar at the top with the clock) to jump to the to top of a long email or web page.
  2. Press the round Home button and the Sleep/Wake button on top of the iPhone to take a screenshot to the “Saved Photos” library in the Photos app.
  3. Touch and hold any image in the Safari browser or Mail to get a menu for saving the image to the “Saved Photos” library in the Photos app.
  4. Double-tap the Shift key/button to enable Caps Lock. First you’ll need to make sure “Enable Caps Lock” is turned on in the Keyboard section of General settings.
  5. To quickly type a capital letter, touch the Shift key and without lifting your finger, slide over to the desired key. This also works with punctuation with the Number key (touch Number key and slide to desired character).
  6. Touch and hold an alphabetic key to access letters in other languages.
  7. Similarly, touching and holding down certain punctuation keys will let you access related punctuation. The quotes button will let you access curly quotes and angled quotes. The dollar sign button accesses the Euro, British pound, Japanese yen, and Korean won currency symbols. And the question mark and exclamation mark buttons access their upside down versions used in Spanish.
  8. Touch and hold the .com button to reveal buttons for .net, .edu, and .org.
  9. Press the Sleep/Wake button at the top of the iPhone for a few seconds then drag the red slider that appears to turn it off completely.
  10. To force-quit an app, hold down the round Home button for at least 6 seconds.
  11. To force a hard reboot of the phone when even #9 isn’t working, press the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button for at least 10 seconds.
  12. In the General section of the Settings app, you can change the action of double-clicking the Home Button to go to your Phone Favorites or the iPod app instead of just the Home screen.
  13. No matter what page of apps you’re viewing on the Home screen, click the Home button to jump back to the first page.
  14. In the Mail and SMS apps, you can quickly delete an item by swiping your finger across it from left to right to show a Delete button.
  15. Double-click the mic on your iPhone headphones to go the next track and triple-click it to go to the previous track (or the very beginning of the track if it’s playing for more than 3 seconds).
  16. In the Safari browser, if you want to go to a .com page, you can just enter in the domain portion without the http://www. or .com. So for http://www.apple.com, you can just enter apple and then the Go button.
  17. Double-tapping the space bar while typing will add a period and a leading space for the next sentence.
  18. Hold down your finger on a hyperlink while viewing a webpage and you get a pop up notification showing you the full URL of the link you are about to click on.
  19. When taking pictures with the camera, hold down the camera button while you frame your shot and steady your hand. It won’t take the picture until you let go of the button. Your shots will be less blurry.
  20. Instead of swiping your finger across the screen to scroll through pages of apps, tap to the right or left of the small highlighted white circle at the bottom of the current page.
  21. To silence a call, press the Sleep/Wake button or volume button. You can still pick up the call up until it goes to voicemail.
  22. To send a call straight to voicemail, press the Sleep/Wake button twice quickly or press and hold the mic button on the iPhone headphones for 2 seconds. Two low beeps in the headphones confirms that the call was declined.
  23. While on a phone call, you can still tap the Home button and use any apps that don’t require the phone’s data connection such as Contacts, Notes, Calculator, Clock, and Photos. Maybe also Camera but I haven’t tested it.
  24. A single finger will only scroll the entire web page while using two fingers will scroll a frame within a web page.
  25. From the sleep state, you can access the previous track, next track, play, and volume buttons without having to unlock your iPhone or going to the iPod app. Pressing the Home button twice will wake up the display and show a stripped-down iPod menu.
  26. Safari can display PDF files linked from web pages.
