Fans of Clayton Cubitt, here’s one of the defining photographs that directed him from painter to photographer.
Nick Knight, ‘Susie Smoking’, 1988
In his own words:
I saw this image in a magazine in a bookstore in Reno, Nevada. I was sixteen, living in a trailer park on an Indian Reservation in the middle of the desert. I was a dirt poor mohawked skatepunk, about to run away from home. The moment I saw this I went from being an aspiring painter to an aspiring photographer. It’s the visual doorway that led me to where I am today. One of my guiding lights.
It’s going up for auction at Phillips de Pury on November 22 alongside works by a whole host of famous image-makers. You can see them all in the online catalogue.
