Whoa, this cathedral will be opening in my backyard this weekend. It’s the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland. The use of Douglas fir wood beams and natural light give a nice warmth to the concrete interior.

The $190 million cathedral was designed by legendary commercial architectural firm, Skidmore Owings & Merrill. Other notable SOM works include the Sears Tower, SFO International Terminal, and the Burj Dubai which will be tallest structure in the world when completed.

This is the stunning exterior at the edge of Lake Merritt.
