Scaling a Microblogging Service (or what goes into Twitter's sausage)

Eran Hammer-Lahav explains what goes into building a microblogging/messaging service like Twitter. An insightful and readable primer for anyone interested in what it takes to create a truly scalable messaging app.

Continues on in Part 2 and Part 3.

The takeaway point is that building Twitter is probably closer to building a search engine (in terms of complexity) than a blogging app. Anyone contemplating building a web service that will receive and return content firehose-style must read this series.

Note: If you hear “scaling architecture” and think of climbing buildings, these articles are not for you.
