“We try to make the kids feel ownership in the company. Boys hate to smile. It’s not macho. And it’s definitely not macho to clean a bathroom. But if the [weekly safety] auditor walks in and the bathroom isn’t clean, that crew just lost money [$1,000 every week for the top 200 stores]. Next thing he knows, the guy who was supposed to clean the bathroom has toilet paper all over his car and a potato in his tailpipe.” — Jerry Murrell, CEO of Five Guys Burgers in Inc.com article

“The idea of a retirement age was invented by Otto von Bismarck in the 1880s, when as chancellor of Germany he needed a starting age for paying war pensions. He chose the age of 65 because that was typically when ex-soldiers died.” — Excerpted from The shock of the old: Welcome to the elderly age (via kottke.org)

Oakley’s upcoming boot designed for the military, the MultiCam pattern LSA (Land Sea Air) Boot, has a corresponding swim fin that it can be slipped into! The upper is made from Cordura and Teflon-impregnated leather so it’s tough yet lightweight. The soles have mesh-screened holes so it drains quickly.

There’s a planned civilian version but it looks more like a water moccasin. I’m much more interested in the tough boot.

How the Comics Alliance does April Fool’s:

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - America: 1988

When war-hero-turned-handyman Kesuke Miyagi is found drained of blood, it becomes clear that the occult gang known as the Lost Boys are targeting the only individuals that can stop them from complete domination of America. It’s the perfect case for the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen—except that their government contact, Oscar Goldman, disbanded the team in 1979 after they defeated Mr. Han’s army of the living dead.

Now, disgraced scientist Emmet Brown has to put together a new team to combat the growing threat of the Lost Boys and their leader, a newly resurrected vampire kingpin Tony Montana: Transportation specialist Jack Burton, ex-commando B.A. Baracus, tech wizard Angus MacGyver and the mysteriously powerful femme fatale known only as “Lisa.” But will Brown be able to stop the Lost Boys before time runs out?

  $9.99 - 64 pages, full color - 1 of 2 - Scheduled to ship on April 1, 2011

I’m more interested in seeing how this cork umbrella is designed than buying one. The idea of a thin layer of cork supported by a metal frame that can open and close seems magical to me.

iFixit already has a full teardown of the svelte iPad. The most interesting part is the large dual batteries wired up in parallel in a case, like the black casing that covers many of today’s car engines.
